Update – 21 September 2013

September 21, 2013

Bird of Paradox logoSome little while ago, the server on which birdofparadox.net was hosted suffered a massive hardware failure; in addition the domain registration has expired.

The most recent version of the BoPnet blog can be found at the Wayback Machine but I have no immediate plans to try and resurrect it. Neither do I have any plans to continue blogging here.

At the time of writing, I’m still contributing to The F-Word and have recently been diversifying into writing music reviews for a couple of other blogs; if you’re interested, I’m archiving copies of the various posts over at stresswitch.

Many thanks to all my friends and supporters over the years; BoP (in both its guises) was a huge part of my life for over 5 years, but now it’s time for me to move on.

Bird of Paradox has moved to www.birdofparadox.net/blog/

August 4, 2010

Bird of Paradox logoSo I’ve had this new blog site for a couple of weeks now and have been trying to get it looking presentable before announcing it.

Well, it’s pretty much functional now, although I’m still sorting out the blogroll and there’s other stuff I need to do on the archive posts, but it’s there and I think it’s time to make the move – I’ve been cross-posting between there and here for a few days and that’s just plain silly.

The new site is at www.birdofparadox.net/blog/

The RSS feed for posts is feed://www.birdofparadox.net/blog/?feed=rss2

And the RSS feed for comments is feed://www.birdofparadox.net/blog/?feed=comments-rss2

This will be the last post here although I’ll leave the place open (comments closed) for archival purposes even though the entire contents are duplicated at the new blog

So come on over and say hello! (I have cookies!)

we’ll be right back after this break…

July 24, 2010

Apologies for the lack of posts this last week, I’ve been a bit distracted. I hope to get back to regular blogging fairly soon, probably after the weekend.

In the meantime, Lisa has a post up over at QT which I can definitely recommend reading, if you haven’t already seen it:

Bootstrapping

April 18, 2010

Image via http://eroidays.com/2009/05/28/oen-webinar-chanin-mitch-i-chat-on-bootstrapping/

Verb

to pull oneself up by one’s bootstraps

  1. (idiomatic) To begin an enterprise or recover from a setback without any outside help; to succeed only on one’s own effort or abilities.

(Via Wiktionary)

Dealing with cis society and, to a lesser extent, blogging on trans issues feels like that most days.

Lately, my bootstraps have become a bit frayed so I’m taking a brief hiatus while I replace them.

Back in a few.

Happy stalky stalky, happy stalk

January 17, 2010

I’ve had an online presence of one sort or another since I got on the internet after it was commercialised in the mid-1990s. In all that time, although I’ve been careful about which details I put online, I’ve never felt the need to be secretive about who I am or how to contact me – and I guess I’ve been lucky that nothing nasty’s ever resulted from my being (comparatively) open. Until now.

A couple of days ago on Twitter, I got into an argument with someone – that’s no big deal, these things happen. Previously, my experience has been that any differences of opinion are either resolved, or we simply walk away and stay out of each other’s faces. But this most recent disagreement with some random stranger on the internet has provoked an invasion of my (anyway limited) online privacy which has left me feeling really rattled. The fall-out spilled over from Twitter, via this blog, to one of my main email accounts. And finding myself the only name on a Twitter list, started by the partner of my stalker, and labelled “justplainfuckedinthehead” hasn’t helped my sense of safety, either.

So this post is just to say that I’ve set up a new (locked) Twitter account to replace the soon-to-be-deleted compromised one, and will be re-following people over the next few days.

As for this blog and the email address; I’m weighing up my options. Comments are now closed here for obvious reasons and there’s a good chance I’ll relocate this blog elsewhere in the near future; likewise, the unsafe email address will probably also have to go.

Normal service will be resumed shortly. I hope.

Happy First Bloggiversary to BoP

May 7, 2009

Bird of Paradox logoOoh, that one nearly slipped past…

It’s been just over a year – a year and two days to be precise – since I made my first post here at BoP (even though I’d had the blog itself parked in cold storage since 2007). Well, technically it wasn’t my first piece – it was an archivey-crossposty-thingy from The F-Word – but it was my first post here.

Any excuse for some statistical flounciness and general showing off, then:

  • Total hits: 44,003 (currently averaging 173 per day)
  • Busiest month: April 2009 (7993 hits), average 266 per day
  • Busiest day: Friday, October 3, 2008 (717 hits)
  • Number of posts: 383 (And 30 drafts? WTF?)

And by the look of that whizzy new(-ish) ClustrMaps widget, the majority of visitors are from the US.

Oh! – my Technorati rating, let me show you it, for it is shiny and pleases me:

  • Authority: 62
  • Rank: 81,461

Go me.

Well, if I wasn’t off to the dentist momentarily, we could have a party. Best frocks, party games, indoor fireworks, jelly & ice cream, fizzy pop, cake. Mmm… sugar rush… Ah well, another time…

Anyway, thanks to one and all for your support and sparkliness, and here’s to the next twelve months.

Yay the pink butterfly bird and all who fly with her (and yep, I still want that tattoo!)

…lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip it’s been…

Ohz noez! Not *another* 2008 roundup…

December 31, 2008

Bird of Paradox logoBeen a funny old year, one way or another. The online trans community is, by definition, not only global, but also far-flung to the point of attenuation. As such it’s an almost impossible task to pick out the traditional 10 best posts, so I’ll totally cop out of that and instead, point you in the direction of my blogroll and suggest you go straight to the source(s).

Having decided to break with the ’10 best posts’ tradition, I thought it might be interesting (for me, at least) to browse through some of the comprehensive collection of facts’n’ figures in the BoP blog stats vaults. I’ve been quite pleasantly surprised – and you know how much I like to share!

19012ETA, 10.30pm: My usually irritating attention to detail meant that I couldn’t log out of BoP for the night without one last obsessive glance at the stats page… And… ZOMFGWTFLULZ!!!1!!!1!! In the last hours of the last day of the year, BoP has passed the 19,000 hits mark! How amazing is that – 19,012 unique views! Yay all my bloggy visitors and yay Bird of Paradox!

*ahem*

Where was I? Oh yes: so, without further ado, BoP loudly presents the first and final blog stats update for 2008…

tg_black-on_pink_100x107My favourite search terms would have to be transsexual neck, wizard medical and smultron female – but I think I like this one the best: ordinary middle aged transgender women… Yep, I know that feeling!

A big hand for the spam monster: “Akismet has protected your site from 936 spam comments already, but there’s nothing in your spam queue at the moment”. Just as well, really, I still take it unnecessarily personally when some idiot spambot decides I need to remortgage my p3n15. “Too late!”, I rage futilely at the screen…

20081225-240x389And, last but not least, a big thank you for all the support and encouragement I’ve had from the huge number of people who’ve visited the site. Friends, bloggers, friendly bloggers, everyone – and no, I’m not naming names, you know who you are :)

When I took this blog out of cold storage in May and started to post more regularly, I didn’t for one minute imagine it would ever be as well-supported as it has been, so to have received nearly 19,000 views in such a short time is as confidence-boosting as it’s humbling.

May the coming year bring you everything you wish for yourselves.
